5 issues in public safety
Lulu Ross Elementary School fire recovery
A catastrophic fire destroyed Ross Elementary, displacing over 600 students and nearly 100 staff. Council waived all city fees for the recovery, and the superintendent asked the city to prioritize an engineer's condemnation determination. Recovery could take two to three years.
Pet waste and litter enforcement
A resident asked for a pooper-scooper law and more trash bins; the police chief explained state law and city codes already cover pet waste, and another resident asked again for more bins and no-littering signs downtown.
Police Evidence Facility Change Order
Additional work to relocate an EV charger at the police evidence building was up for authorization. It's a small-scope change but touches the police facility budget.
Shopping Cart Litter
Councilmember James wants the city to look at what other towns have done to hold stores responsible for carts abandoned on Church Street, North Street and elsewhere.
Automated License Plate Readers (Flock Cameras)
A resident asked council to put the Flock camera question on a future agenda, and Councilmember James confirmed the public safety committee — which postponed its meeting for lack of quorum — is the proper body to address it.
